In memory of my high school classmates who are no longer with us.
We played so hard, we ran so fast, we jumped so high
We dove the deepest waters and and took in the sky
We slapped when the mosquitoes bit, stayed out until the street lamps lit
We made the most of all of it, till parents called
Drank from the sheltered fountain down on Hewitt Street
Shared ice cream at The Island Store, cold and sweet
We picnicked at McCarty's Cove, into the Chocolay River dove
It seemed we never would grow old, or lose our way
Every ten years more or less, we'd all come back and try to guess
Who got married, who divorced, whose life was on a wayward course
Every ten years less or more, we wanted what had gone before
We reminisced, pulled at the threads, but left the sad things all unsaid
Skate at the Palestra on a winters night
A high school dance at homecoming, the lights so bright
Football cleats, new friends to meet, a sweetheart in the cars back seat
Days were long, then short and sweet, and oh, so fine
Years turned into decades as we moved along
Some stayed home, some sought a place where theyd belong
But the biggest part of each hometown heart, stayed right here back at the start
Where Mom filled up the shopping cart and Dad would drive
Every ten years more or less, we'd travel home, forget the mess
Of lives gone sideways, love gone wrong, or cherished friends who now are gone
Every ten years, less or more, we wanted what had gone before
We reminisced, pulled at the threads, but left the sadness all unsaid
Today I learned you wont be coming back around
To walk the melancholy streets of our hometown
Still I cant help but see your face, feel again your warm embrace
You are gone without a trace
We raise a glass, at once we smile and shed a tear
And toast the friends and lovers no longer here
The enemies who made amends, the crushes and the best of friends,
Or lovers till the very end
Every ten years more or less, our hearts are filled with tenderness
For all the women, all the men, who long to be those kids again
Every ten years, maybe more, we want to go back through that door
Where memories are real again, and we rejoin our long lost friends
