I thought we were forever
The last in the "imaginary love affair" series (for now anyway).
The open A chord is one of the easiest and first chords we learn to play on guitar, and 50 years on it still has a power and resonance for me distinct from any other chord somehow.
This is an attempt to wring as much emotion from a simple guitar figure as I could.
The picture and intended scene is Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland (hence Helvetia), one of the most beautiful places on earth.
In case Mrs Smivet reads this, all characters and events are fictional etc.
The sun rises like a king
Magnificent
Giving radiance to everything
Like a scene painted on glass
The snow capped mountains
Beneath a crystal sky
Waterfalls like diamonds
Just breathtaking
Enough to break your heart
Enough to break anyone's heart
I thought we were forever.
So I came back
I came back here
I didn't know what else to do
Not perhaps such a great idea
But I'm still drawn by you
Back to the places that you loved the most
Thought perhaps I might find you here
Thought perhaps I could summon your ghost
Can't we just forgive
Can't we just forgive?
I thought we were forever.
